This modern farmhouse is a primary residence designed to engage the out-of-doors on all sides while making use of its spectacular site. It is large enough to accommodate the entire family for holidays but also has a manageable core for daily living. All the entertaining spaces address the landscape. The large custom kitchen is designed for the hard-working pair of gardeners who like to bring the outdoors in through flowers and food from their extensive garden and small farm. There is an east facing breakfast patio adjacent to the kitchen. The porch, with an integrated grilling area and retractable screens, is accessed through the living room or via the bar that connects to the kitchen. The living room is flanked by the kitchen and porch with western views to the horizon and an eastern clerestory that gathers ambient afternoon light. The public spaces of the house - entry, hallways and pool room - are all paved with the same natural-cleft bluestone that is used on the exterior to enhance the sense of continuous pathways throughout the volumes and programmatic elements of the project.
